CE, UL, ETL & RoHS: A Compliance Cheat-Sheet for Hardware Exporters

Compliance is where first-time exporters lose the most time. The good news: the must-have list is shorter than it looks once you split it by market.

For Europe, CE marking is mandatory for most electrical and machinery products, supported by an EU Declaration of Conformity and technical file. RoHS limits hazardous substances and pairs with CE for electronics. These two clear customs and satisfy most retailers.

For North America, there is no federal 'CE equivalent.' Instead, look to ETL or UL listing for electrical products, and FCC for anything with a radio module (Bluetooth tools, connected appliances). UL is the gold standard retailers ask for; ETL is the faster, equivalent path.

Food-contact and appliance-specific marks matter for kitchens: LFGB or FDA for food-safe surfaces, NSF for commercial kitchens. Don't over-specify — pay for the mark your target market actually enforces.

Our rule: agree the exact certification list in the contract before tooling. Testing budget belongs in the first order, and the certificate should travel with the shipment's paperwork.
