Stainless vs Zinc-Plated Fasteners: Which to Stock

Fasteners look commodity, but the material choice drives both margin and returns. The two workhorses are 304 stainless steel and zinc-plated carbon steel.
304 stainless wins wherever corrosion is the enemy: coastal, outdoor, marine, kitchen and bathroom fixtures. It costs more but virtually eliminates rust-related complaints and is often a requirement in food-grade and medical-adjacent assemblies.
Zinc-plated steel is the value default for dry, indoor structural use — furniture, general assembly, shelving. It is significantly cheaper and strong enough for most static loads.
A common mistake is over-specifying stainless everywhere to avoid complaints, which erodes price competitiveness. The right answer is a tiered assortment: stainless for wet/outdoor, zinc for dry indoor, sold as a clear choice to the buyer.
For assortments, we recommend leading with a 304 stainless kit for the premium shelf and a zinc-plated kit for the value shelf, clearly labeled by use case.
